Thoughts about fiction editting

The objective of our group is to choose good stories as many as we can among a lot of submissions.  

What are you most pleased?

We feel pleased when we read some good stories that fit our five principles quite well. Besides, after we choose the best six pieces of fiction, we step into editorial process. We are pleased when seeing stories become better through our editing. 

What problems did you have?

Our group has three major problems. One is because the bad quality of submissions. We received 55 pieces of fiction in totoll. We feel upset when we found many of them were not qualified, especially some pieces are long and terrible. In order to get enough good stories published, we did extra reading of stories in blogs. The second problem is that we did not leave enough time for editing. Since the quality of submissions was not good, we always expected we would have good submissions next week. However, the fact was that the submissions in next week were still not good. In the end, when we found there was no much time left, we had to choose some stories which seemed better among these submissions and the time of editing was limited. The third problem is that sometimes editors could not have a effective communication with writers. For example, i revised a paragraph which i thought it was not clear. I sent my revision to the writer. And when i read his story again, i found he ignored my revision and rewrote that paragraph which still was not clear. The problem is that he did not realize that paragraph was not clear and he thought it was other problem. Next time i would tell writer the problem he have in a specific paragraph before you are going to add some sentences. 

What would you do differently? 

According the problems we met this time, we will do some changes next time. Firstly, we have to pick out one story from submissions every week. Then, we need to start editing as soon as possible and make sure we have enough time for editing. Secondly, we would make communication between editors and writers more effectively. We could communicate with writers face to face instead of communicating on line, because we could express our concerns and confusions clearly and make communication more effectively. If we want to delecte some sentences or add some sentences, we’d better point out why we do this to make writers realize the problem they have.
