The story is so heartfelt and striking because the photographer used a silent visual art to show cancer, love and life. Without a word, what this husband, Angelo Merendino did was attempting to record his loved wife’s final journey of life. The first photo probably was taken when Jennifer was diagnosed with breast cancer. We cannot see any suffering on their faces. Instead, life seems so beautiful to this couple. However, in the following photos, we see that Jennifer became more fragile. Her hair started to lose and she had to cut hair off in the end. We can feel Jennifer’s physical and mental pain was increasing day by day from her weaker body and paler face. Not only Jennifer herself, we can even feel suffering of our photographer, the husband through his lens. When we browse the photos, although we afraid of the cruelness of cancer, we more regret the loss of Jennifer, because the powerful love between the couple and the strong will of the lady.

The previous pictures showed that, Jennifer still tried to forget the pain and enjoy her rest life. She walked on the road, swam on the ocean, played with her cat and celebrated her birthday. She really displayed optimism and confidence to life. However, in the last ten photos, it comes that the unacceptable fact that Jennifer was in a sever condition. Most of time, she was lying on the bed in the hospital. Her pale face and emaciated body were directly and obviously shown in the photos. Her eyes draw our attention. We can clearly see her helpless and fear through her eyes. We all know that majority of patients who suffer cancer would have to experience that extreme painful days. The photos humanize the face of cancer and capture the difficulty, fear and pain that they experienced during that difficult time, which is a strong and vivid evidence to support the claim that breast cancer is a debilitating and horrible disease that take a heavy toll on the lives of the women and men who suffer from the disease.

In these photos, Merendino not only took pictures of Jennifer, but also Jennifer’s family members and friends. The whole atmosphere was conducted by Jennifer’s disease. They were happy when Jennifer celebrated the birthday and they were painful and helpless when Jennifer huddled up on the bed in pain. They cared about Jennifer so much and felt as she felt. Therefore, it is obvious that patient’s breast cancer also takes a heavy toll on the lives of their loving and supportive family and friends. Therefore, through photos, Merendino shows how a patient with cancer live everyday and makes people who do not familiar with anything about cancer know the pain from this terrible disease. There are a lot amount of people who battle with cancer and suffer huge pain. What the photographer tried to say with these photos is, people should pay more attention to this amount of patients and try best to help them. And of course he was encouraging audience to cherish people who are around.
